Atonement

Atonement means that God's righteous wrath against sin has been appeased. This does not mean that God was an enemy of man but that we were enemies of God. Atonement opens the door, so to speak, so that people can now come to God to receive forgiveness of sins. Atonement was God's idea (1 John 4:10). It was accomplished through the Lord's work on the cross (1 John 2:2).
