4Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image, and had not received its mark on their foreheads or hands. And they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

5The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years were complete. This is the first resurrection.

Revelation 20:4-5

It is astonishing that some Christians find it difficult to believe in a literal millennial kingdom under the reign of the Lord Jesus Christ, even though Scripture says so clearly:

“And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and for they had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended” (Rev. 20:4-5).

The millennial kingdom often raises many questions about how it will function. There are questions about the temple and the sacrificial service (Ezek. 40–48), questions about the changes in the animal kingdom (Isa. 65:25), questions about the age of human beings (Isa. 65:20), questions about who will enter the kingdom, etc. Some of these questions are not so difficult to answer, while others are not so easy to answer or imagine from today’s perspective.

But when God has said something, it will come to pass. The fact that we cannot comprehend something does not invalidate the truth. The Sadducees could not imagine a world of resurrection because married life cannot function there (Matthew 22). That is why they denied or spiritualized what Scripture teaches about the resurrection. But the Lord had to tell them that they did not know Scripture or the power of God.

God will fulfill his word, and he will do so in his power. This also applies to the coming kingdom of peace, which will last for a thousand years.
