When Israel, led by Joshua, fought against the Amorites, a great miracle happened: the sun remained at its zenith for hours at midday. Joshua (Hebrew: “The LORD is salvation”) was thus able to achieve a tremendous victory over the enemy.
Many centuries later: It suddenly gets dark at midday. For three hours. In these three hours, Jesus (the Greek version of the name “Joshua”) achieves a tremendous victory over sin, death and the devil on the cross at Calvary.
What happened in Joshua’s time was unique: “There was no day like it, before him or after him.” But how much more applicable is this statement to the day when the Lord Jesus accomplished the work of redemption on the cross at Calvary! This day stands out infinitely from all other days – and this day will remain unforgotten in eternity.
