Carried by God's Arms
Exodus 19:4
“You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.”Deuteronomy 1:31
“And in the wilderness where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.”Deuteronomy 33:27
“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms; He will thrust out the enemy from before you, and will say, ‘Destroy!’”Isaiah 46:4
“Even to your old age, I am He; And even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; Even I will carry, and will deliver you.”Psalm 68:20
“Our God is the God of salvation; And to GOD the Lord belong escapes from death.”
2017: A huge flood ravages a village in India. A man carries his household goods out of the house to save everything from destruction. Among other things, his “god,” a Hindu image of God.
A man carries his god—what a contrast to Christians: God carries us! The Bible shows us this wonderfully comforting truth in many places:
- Exodus 19:4: “You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.”
In difficult times of need, when the enemy rages, and there seems to be no way out, our God carries us. The comparison is to a strong, mighty eagle carrying its little chicks.
- Deuteronomy 1:31: “...in the wilderness, where you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.”
There is probably no more beautiful image than a father carrying his son in his arms—a feeling of safety and security. But while fathers only carry their children temporarily, this verse shows that the Lord carries us “all the way.” Right to the end. A beautiful expression from Deuteronomy 33:12 fits in with this, where it is said of someone that he dwells between God’s shoulders.
- Deuteronomy 33:27: “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
The arms that carry us are eternal. They are unshakeable, endlessly strong, have always been there, and will be there forever. A father’s arm becomes weak at some point, but the arms of our God are eternal.
- Isaiah 46:4: “Even to your old age, I am He, and even to gray hairs I will carry you! I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry and will deliver you.”
Again, this strengthens the certainty that the Lord will carry us to the end. His faithfulness and reliability are qualities we can rely on. The fact that He will never abandon us is a strong foundation on which we can stand securely.
- PsalmPsalm simply means "song." In the Old Testament, this word only occurs in connection with the Psalms of David and the Book of Psalms. Singers sang a psalm with instrumental... More 68:19: “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvationSalvation is part of God's plan of saving people. Those who are in danger and cannot help themselves need salvation. We owe our salvation to our Savior, who went to... More!”
But our Lord not only carries us but also our burdens at the same time. The idea here is that the burden becomes lighter for us because someone helps us carry it. Here, we think of 1 Peter 5:7, where we are encouraged to simply cast our cares on Him. He will then carry them.
Having this Truth in the Heart
This being carried is an unshakeable, firm truth for us believers. Especially when we don't feel it, we can cling to it. It is important for us to not only have this well-known fact in our heads but to keep it firmly in our hearts. Then, in difficult times, we can feel like a little boy resting safely in the strong arms of his father.
