Revival. When you hear the word “revival,” you may first think of people like Charles Spurgeon, Martin Luther, George Whitfield, Georg Müller, or other well-known men of God—and rightly so. But does revival still exist today? Hasn’t everything become so flat and Christianity so secularized that revival is no longer possible?
In the life of King Asa (2 Chronicles 14–16)—son of Abijah and father of Jehoshaphat—there was also a revival. Israel, and especially the tribe of Judah, was infested in Asa’s time with idolatry of every kind. Everywhere there were altars for pagan gods, memorial pillars, places of worship for the sun cult, and many more terrible things. When Asa took over the rule in Judah, he first cleaned house rigorously and banished idolatry from his kingdom to a great extent. He became active so that worship and sacrifices could once again be brought to God alone (2 Chronicles 14:1–4).
Second, he called on the people to seek the LORD and to obey the Law and the commandment (2 Chronicles 14:3).
These are the same principles and prerequisites that still apply today to your life and mine, if we want to experience revival personally and in the churches.
First, we must radically clean up the sin in our lives—everything that dishonors God has to go—selfishness, idolatry, sexual immorality, greed, sinful relationships, etc. (1 John 1:9; Proverbs 28:13). But so that we do not then remain standing in a vacuum, we begin to read the Bible in prayer and to do what God tells us in His Word.
Ask God to help you do what you have learned in His Word. The Lord Jesus wants to grant revival in your life, so that you truly burn for Him! (Luke 24:32)
