Judges 6:23

“Then the Lord said to him, ‘Peace be with you; do not fear’.” (Judges 6:23)
Gideon is one of the people in the Bible who is often afraid:
- He is afraid of the Midianites.
- Twice he asks God for signs.
- He is afraid to go into the Midianite camp by himself.
- In the above situation, he thinks he will be killed by the angel of the Lord.
So Gideon is a fearful believer - but he did not stop there. He is not characterized by the fact that he performs deeds for God without fear. But he overcomes his fear. Paul also encourages us to do this: ”But in all things, we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses” (2 Cor. 6:4).
How does Gideon always get the help he needs from God in his fear?
- God calls him a "mighty man of valor" (Jud. 6:12). God values what we do for Him despite our fear. Fear does not disqualify us in the eyes of God. This is also made clear by the fact that Gideon finds a place in the list of heroes in Hebrews 11.
- God does not rebuke Gideon but meets him in his weakness (even though it would, of course, have been better to trust God without signs) (Jud. 6:36-40). God does not criticize us for our fear but comes in with His help in our need.
- God knows His servant and sees his fear. Therefore, He suggests that Gideon take Pura with him as support. God gives us brothers and sisters in the faith who can support us in frightening situations. Have we ever considered facing one of our fears together with a brother or sister?
- God calls out to him, "Peace to you!" We already reflected on this encouragement regarding the peace in our hearts in devotion 4.
The Lord Jesus tells you today: "Don't be afraid! I appreciate what you do for me despite your fear. I come to your aid in your weakness, and I have resources to help you with your fear."
