17The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;

a broken and a contrite heart,

O God, You will not despise.

Psalms 51:17

3A bruised reed He will not break

and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish;

He will faithfully bring forth justice.

Isaiah 42:3

At some point, every child brings their father a toy that has just broken. If it is broken beyond repair, it goes into the garbage can—it can no longer be used.

How differently our Lord deals with broken things! With Him, there is never a hopeless case, never a final disqualification. On the contrary, God prefers to work with broken things and people (rather than with those who trust too much in themselves).

Let’s think of some examples:

  • Jacob could only be properly blessed after his hip, and therefore his strength was broken.
  • Only when Gideon’s army had broken the clay jars could the light shine and initiate the defeat of the enemies.
  • Only when Mary had broken the alabaster vial could the wonderful fragrance fill the house.
  • It was only when the Lord broke the five loaves that He was able to feed a huge crowd.

Do you feel broken inside? The Lord wants to draw you to Himself and use you in this very state!
