God Cares for Widows

36And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years and had lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, 37and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She did not leave the temple grounds, serving night and day with fasts and prayers.

– Luke 2:36-37

In Luke’s Gospel, the Gospel of grace, many widows are mentioned. That is very striking. We see that these women were and are able to count on God’s special care.

  • Loneliness and old age: the elderly prophetess Anna (Luke 2:36–37). – She attended the services, prayed much, praised God, and used her time to talk with others about spiritual matters. She was allowed to see the Lord Jesus.

  • Famine: the starving widow from Zarephath (Luke 4:25–26). – She practiced hospitality in trust in God. She was provided for continually.

  • Grief: the grieving widow from Nain (Luke 7:12). – She met the Lord Jesus and found comfort in the resurrection.

  • Attacks: the oppressed widow and the unrighteous judge (Luke 18:3–5) – The widow remained persistent and did not let herself simply be cheated. Justice was secured for her. In application, she remained steadfast in prayer and experienced an answer.

  • Money worries: the penniless widow at the treasury in the temple (Luke 21:1–4). – This very poor woman gave her entire livelihood for the things of God. She receives the recognition of the Son of God.

  • For every widow and every believer, it is encouraging to see the grace that turns to the helpless. At the same time, we also see a field of work that opens up for them:

  • Attend services
  • Plead
  • Praise God
  • Speak good to others
  • Practice hospitality
  • Let oneself be comforted by the resurrection
  • Be persistent (in prayer)
  • Give generously
