In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not one thing made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:1-4
In these verses, the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, is described as the “Word”, i.e. as the one who reveals and makes God known (John 1:14; 1 John 1:1, 2; Rev 19:13; cf. John 1:18). The “Word” is shown in very different relationships in this passage.
The Word in relation to time
“In the beginning was the Word.” The Word became not in the beginning, it was. “Before Abraham was, I am”, said the Lord Jesus to the astonished and angry Jews (John 8:58). No matter how far back you want to go in your thoughts, no matter what beginning you imagine – the Word was already there. The Word is eternal.
The Word in relation to God
“The Word was with God, and the Word was God. This was in the beginning with God.” The Word is a personality distinct from God, who lives with God and is God at the same time. The Word is also an eternal personality because it has always been with God. The Word is God – a person of the triune God.
The Word in relation to creation
“All things came into being through the same thing, and without the same thing there was not one thing that came into being.” The Word was always there, but creation became – through the Word. The Word made everything. We can look at every detail of creation: There is nothing to be found that cannot be traced back to the Word. All things are through Him and for Him.
The Word in relation to man
“In him was life, and the life was the light of men.” The Word created everything visible, but not eternal life – for that has no beginning. Eternal life has always been in Him. When the Word became flesh, this life was revealed and people were brought into the light (John 1:14; 8:12; 1 John 1:2). The Word brought light and life to us.
The joy of fellowship
The glory of the Word, which is described to us here in simple and brief words, is great. Whoever believes in the Lord Jesus has eternal life, walks in his light and can have fellowship with this eternal person. Is there any greater joy on this earth?
