Like an apple tree: Christ brings delight

Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, so is my beloved among the sons; I have sat down in his shade with delight, and his fruit is sweet to my palate. Song of Songs 2:2

The bride compares her beloved bridegroom to an apple tree that brings her pleasure and joy. We recognize in this the appreciation that a Christian has for his Lord. The trees of the forest provide refreshing shade. But they bear no fruit and therefore bring no nourishment. An apple tree, however, provides shade and food. In the heat of everyday life, we find “shade” through earthly comforts that bring us variety and joy. But we do not find food for our souls in them. We only find nourishment in the Son of God, the true “apple tree”. With Him we really come to rest, and through fellowship with Him our “inner man” is strengthened. Have you already sat under the true “apple tree” with joy today and enjoyed its fruit?
