Living as a Witness - How?

The healing of leprosy is made known - our salvation too?

In this passage, the Lord's power and compassion were in the foreground when He healed a leper. He then asked the man to show himself to the priest. The priest was to confirm that the disease was gone. Going to the priest was obedience to the biblical injunctions about leprosy (cf. Lev 14). Still, the Lord also wanted to make something else clear. The priests and other religious leaders did not believe that Jesus was the anointed of God so that this healing would be a testimony to them. If Jesus had done this healing, wouldn't He have to be the Savior and the Christ?

Examples of Being a Christian in Everyday Life

This principle has much to tell us about our Christian lives. If we have been healed from the "disease" of sin, we should consciously live and act in the presence of unbelievers in such a way that we are a witness to them.

Here are some examples of this changed lifestyle:

  • Be kind!
  • Remain humble!
  • Speak with gentleness!
  • Avoid vulgar language and dirty jokes!
  • Refuse to lie or cheat!
  • Stay out of gossip!
  • Tell your coworkers or neighbors that you prayed for them!
  • Read your Bible even in public!
  • Talk about going to Christian meetings, Bible conferences, retreats, etc.
  • In short, make it clear that you are applying heavenly wisdom to your everyday decisions!

Be there with your heart!

Motives are indeed important: Public prayers or kind behavior just for the sake of praising others will not honor the Lord. But if there is no public evidence of our gospel transformation, what does it even mean to live as a Christian?

The man who was cleansed of leprosy was indeed cleansed, whether the priest saw him or not. It would be wrong to think that we can display the characteristics of Christ to be healed. But we can (and should) precisely because we have been healed by Him. Shouldn't others know that He really is the Savior?
