When one has to wait a long time for divine salvation, it stirs the soul, and the desire for help from above grows ever stronger. The psalmist also experienced this: his soul languished for salvation.
In difficult situations, we also look to God for a promise. We want a Bible verse that speaks to our situation and comforts us. Our eyes feverishly scan the Bible text, seeking something that will comfort us. We go to Christian gatherings with high expectations, hoping for a special word for us. But sometimes the comfort we long for simply does not come. As a result, “our eyes grow dim,” and we ask ourselves in disappointment, “When will you comfort me?”
What should we do in such a situation? What did the psalmist do? He expressed his feelings honestly before God and, secondly, he did not allow himself to be swayed: he remained faithful to God’s word. He did not forget or abandon the word of God, as the following verses show. And in this way, our inner being will also be strengthened, perhaps more gradually. Moreover, in this way, we remain with the only source from which we can truly draw comfort. Don’t give up! Stay with God’s Word! Comfort will come!
