“But I am in your midst as the one who serves.” Luke 22:27
The higher a person is placed, the more their service they perform for others is respected. It makes a difference whether a municipal employee sweeps our yard or the mayor. If even a head of state were to perform this menial task, it would be a great condescension.
And what should we say when we think of the Son of God and his unique ministry of love? He did not have water poured over His hands like Elijah, but He washed the dirty feet of the disciples (2 Kings 3:11; John 13:5). He was not served a meal on request like Elijah, but He prepared breakfast for His disciples (1 Kings 17:11-16; John 21:5, 9, 12).
He, the High and Lofty One, took on the form of a servant and served in grace. He, who had the right to be served by every human being, did not make use of this right, but became the servant of all. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). What incomparable humility!
