Grumbling and complaining

Did you get a cold shower?

Do not take seriously all words which are spoken, so that you will not hear your slave cursing you. For you also have realized that you likewise have many times cursed others. Ecclesiastes 7:22

Grumbling and complaining are part of everyday life in this world. It was already that way in biblical times as well:

  • Moses was to lead the people of God out of Egypt; therefore he went to Pharaoh and presented his inconvenient demands. But he was accused by his countrymen of having plunged the people of Israel into even greater difficulties by doing so (Exodus 5:21).
  • Samson was raised up by God as a judge to free his people from the yoke of the Philistines. When he fought against the Philistines, many accused him of rebellion and put shackles around his strong hands (Judges 15:11).
  • David danced for joy when the ark of the covenant was brought to Jerusalem. However, his wife Michal, Saul’s daughter, brazenly thought he had behaved in a humiliating manner before his people (2 Samuel 6:20).
  • Elijah wanted to lead the apostate people to repentance and prayed for a disciplinary measure from God. When the rain then failed to come, Ahab accused him of having brought Israel into trouble, even though he himself was the cause of the misery (1 Kings 18:17–18).
  • Jeremiah called on the inhabitants of Jerusalem not to resist the advancing Babylonians. Although he was acting on divine commission and wanted to prevent a bloodbath, he was denounced for demoralizing the army and the people (Jeremiah 38:4).
  • John the Baptist lived in holy separation and refrained from lavish food and drink, but the decadent and unrepentant people only snarled: “He has a demon” (Matthew 11:18).
  • The great Master ate and drank with tax collectors and sinners in order to lead them to faith, but the people had the audacity to call Him a glutton and a drunkard (Luke 7:34).
  • Paul and Silas traveled a great deal and proclaimed the gospel of peace everywhere. But the jealous Jews only whispered that they were stirring up the whole world (Acts 17:6).

You do well not to weigh everything on a gold scale that is flung at you as criticism. Do not take the grumbling to heart, and never let it turn you aside from a path shown by God!
