The place for his head: Where Christ laid his head

30Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

– John 19:30

“And he bowed his head and gave up the Spirit.” John 19:30

When a man said to the Lord Jesus that he wanted to follow Him everywhere, the Master replied with the remarkable words: “Foxes have dens, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has not where to lay His head” (Matt 8:20; Luke 9:58). The Son of Man, to whom all creation is subject (Ps 8:7-9), had, unlike the animals, no fixed place to spend the night – no place where He could “lay His head”.

The word translated as “lay down” is “kli-no” in the basic Greek text. This word appears again with regard to the Lord Jesus in John 19:30: “So when Jesus had taken the vinegar, he said, ‘It is finished! And he bowed [Greek: klino] his head and gave up the Spirit.” The people who did not want to have and receive Jesus nailed Him to a cross – this wood became the place where Jesus could lay His head!

We thank the one who was prepared to go the way of rejection and complete the work of atonement on the cross. “To him be the glory, both now and for the day of eternity! Amen” (2 Peter 3:18).
