18knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.

1 Peter 1:18-19

We were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold—these things could not have redeemed us at all—but with the precious blood of Christ. Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness (Hebrews 9:22). That is the divine principle. But the blood of bulls and goats could never take away sins (Hebrews 10:4). Only the blood of a lamb, unblemished and spotless, could make atonement. It is the blood of the Lamb of God, who was slaughtered on the cross of Calvary (John 1:29, 36). This blood of Christ, shed once for all, has met all God’s holy and righteous claims with regard to sin and has made atonement forever. Through the giving up of His pure and spotless life on the cross of Calvary, the Lord Jesus has glorified His God and Father as highly as never before (Ephesians 5:2).

Who could measure the value of the blood of Christ in God’s eyes? It is exceedingly precious in His eyes. That is why Peter speaks of the “precious blood of Christ.” It has fully met all God’s demands regarding sin and has forever appeased His justified wrath against it. The blood of Christ is the basis on which God can now justify everyone who has faith in Jesus (Romans 3:24–26). What God said then regarding the blood of the slaughtered Passover lamb now applies to everyone who, in faith, takes refuge in the blood of Christ shed on the cross: “And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you” (Exodus 12:13).

The blood of Christ is precious in God’s eyes, but it is also precious in our eyes, for it is the blood by which alone we could be redeemed. The Lord Jesus paid for us with the price of His own blood, giving His life for our redemption. We have been bought for a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). The ransom of His blood, shed once for all, is so great that it would be sufficient for the redemption of all people, but it benefits only those who also accept the offered redemption in faith (Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45; 1 Timothy 2:5–6). Do we thank the Lord Jesus every day for redeeming us through His precious blood?
