τετέλεσται and γίνομαι – Two Great Words

God/Jesus Christ

30Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.

John 19:30

6Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give water to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life, without cost.

At the end of his life on this earth, the Lord Jesus said: “It is finished” (John 19:30). In the original manuscript, this is just one word: τετέλεσται “tetelestai.” This glorious word makes it clear: Christ has accomplished everything the Father gave Him. In this way, He laid the foundation for every divine blessing. Through His work of redemption on the cross, sin can be abolished, and everything can become new.

When there will be a new heaven and a new earth, God will proclaim: “It is done” (Rev 21:6). In the original manuscript, this also is just one word: γίνομαι “ginomai.” This word makes it clear: everything God has planned will be accomplished. The universe will be brought into harmony with God, and believers will enjoy eternal happiness.

Because Christ cried out in suffering on the cross: “It is finished!” the one who sits on the throne will one day say triumphantly: “It is done!”
