Anointing, Unction

Priests and kings were anointed in the Old Testament. This consecrated them for their office or ministry. Oil was used for the anointing, which was poured onto the person's head. The anointing oil refers to the Holy Spirit, which believers receive (cf. 1 Sam 16:13). This is why the Bible speaks of the "anointing of the Holy One" (1 John 2:20). In Greek, “anointed” means Christ (John 1:41; 45), and in Hebrew, Messiah (Dan. 9:25 f.). There are many anointed ones (Saul, David, …), but only one is the Anointed One, Jesus Christ (Ps. 2:2; Mk. 14:61; Acts 4:26).
