Beelzebub

This name probably comes from the deity from Ekron Baal-Sebub (2 Kgs 1:2-4), which translates as "Lord of the Flies". It was considered a protector against poisonous flies and, therefore, a healer of diseases. The Pharisees claimed that Jesus cast out demons through Beelzebul (Mt 12:24). In this terrible blasphemy, he is called the "prince of demons." The Lord makes it clear that this refers to Satan (Lk 11:18).
