Burnt Offering

The sacrifices described in the Old Testament show the ground and means of approach to God. They are all typical and foreshadow Christ, who has fulfilled them all. The basic offerings are five: the burnt offering, the meal offering, the peace offering, and the sin and trespass offerings. The burnt offering belongs to those offerings that were freewill offerings and offerings that were a sweet-smelling savor to the Lord. This sacrifice was completely for God. Everything had to be burnt. There was nothing left for the priest or the sacrificer (in contrast to other offerings). The burnt offering is typical of Christ presenting himself according to the divine will for the accomplishment of the purpose and maintenance of the glory of God (Eph 5:2).
