Chastisement, Discipline

Discipline actually refers to the upbringing of a child. It includes teaching, reprimanding, and punishment, if necessary. The aim is for someone to reach the necessary maturity. The New Testament speaks of the discipline that the heavenly Father exercises on his children out of love so that we may share in his holiness (Heb 12:4-11). There are also various forms of discipline within the church (e.g., exclusion in 1 Cor. 5).
