Elder

The word sometimes refers to an older person who is endowed with wisdom and dignity. It often also refers to an office (both in Israel and the early church). In the letters of the New Testament, elders are mature persons who bear responsibility in a local church (cf. Acts 20:17, 28). Elders are never mentioned in the singular. The ministry of elders still exists today, but there are no officially appointed and elected elders.
