Levite

The Levites are from the tribe that descends from Levi, one of the sons of Jacob. God chose the Levites as a redemption for all the firstborn of Israel, which God claimed for Himself. So they wholly belonged to God and were given to Aaron to minister in all service that was connected with the Tabernacle (except the priesthood, which was restricted to Aaron and his descendants). Later, the Levites got different tasks in connection with the temple in Jerusalem. There were three main branches of the Levites: the Gershonites, the Kohathites, and the Merarites. The Levites had no inheritance in the land, and in order for them to be free to serve the Lord, tithes were given to them.
