Just as the human body has different body parts that have different tasks but are all for the benefit of the body and are centrally controlled by the head, God compares his church/assembly to a body: Christ is the head, from whom everything is controlled and every believer is a member with a particular task for the benefit of this body. One becomes a member of the body of Christ through conversion and the new birth, not through a ritual of admission to a local church.
