Rabbi

"Rabbi" is derived from the Hebrew word "rab" ("great") and is used among the Jews as a respectful designation for a spiritual teacher (e.g., John 1:38). "Rabbuni" (or Rabban) has the same meaning but sounds fuller and more majestic. It is used for particularly outstanding scribes. Mary addresses the Lord Jesus with this form of address in John 20:16.
