Ransom

A ransom is the price of release. The term is often used to refer to the money paid to release slaves. In the Bible, it says that Jesus, “the Son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom” (Mt 20:28). The life that he has given is the ransom, the price paid to release those bound into sin. 1 Timothy 2:6 says: “who gave himself a ransom for all” because the Lord’s work is sufficient for all men. But Matthew 20:28 says: “to give his life a ransom for many,” which means “in place of” and signifies the substitution of Jesus' life on the cross for all those who accept his payment for their sins.
