Sanctuary

Name for the house or room that represented the dwelling place of God in the midst of his people in the OT. Used in the OT to describe and characterize both the tabernacle and the temple. This is where worship was to take place, where people were allowed to come close to God. In the New Testament, the term is used in reference to the earthly sanctuary in the Old Testament to describe the immediate presence of God symbolically. On the one hand, this is where the Lord Jesus entered after completing his work of redemption (Heb 9:12), and on the other hand, because of this sacrifice, we now also have full freedom to enter into the immediate presence of God (as worshippers)
