Scribes

The scribes knew the writings of the Old Testament well and had the task of teaching and explaining the law. They did this primarily in the synagogues. They were also responsible for prosecuting lawbreakers. Some scribes – such as Paul – were also Pharisees. Because many of them added their precepts to the law of God, the Lord Jesus repeatedly denounced their behavior.
