Synagogue

At the time of the New Testament, the synagogue was a place where people gathered to hear the law. The beginnings of synagogues probably date back to the time of the Babylonian exile. After returning home, meeting rooms were established in many places where people met to pray and study the law. Each synagogue had a ruler who was responsible for external order.
