Temple

The house and dwelling place of God in Jerusalem in the OT. The forerunner was the tabernacle.  It consisted of two main rooms, the sanctuary and the Holy of Holies, which were separated from each other by a curtain. The sanctuary contained a golden lampstand, a table with 12 loaves of bread, and the golden altar of incense, while the Ark of the Covenant was in the Holy of Holies. In the letters of the New Testament, the term is also used for the assembly of the living God (the "house of God") and the bodies of believers in which the Holy Spirit dwells (1 Cor 3:16,17; 6:19; Eph 2:21).
