Trespass offering

An Israelite had to bring guilt offerings if he

  • had heard the voice of the curse (Lev 5:1) or
  • had touched something unclean (e.g. carrion) (Lev 5:2) or
  • had sworn rashly (Lev 5:4) or
  • had sinned against the holy things of the LORD (Lev 5:15) or
  • had transgressed a prohibition of the LORD (Lev 5:17) or
  • had embezzled something entrusted to him by his neighbor (Lev 5:21).

For the forgiveness of guilt,

  • a confession of guilt was required (Lev 5:5),
  • the offering of a sacrifice (Lev 5:6),
  • the restitution of the entrusted property and, in addition, a fifth (Lev 5:23-24).

The sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross at Golgotha is the basis for the forgiveness of guilt, which is granted to all who confess their sins before God and believe in the Redeemer and His work of atonement.
