He who prophesies | 1 Corinthians 14:3

3But the one who prophesies speaks to people for edification, exhortation, and consolation.

– 1 Corinthians 14:3

Today’s Bible verse is about proclaiming the Word of God in the assembly. First, the question arises: What is prophecy? The biblical answer is in 1 Peter 4:11: “If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God.” This means that the speaker proclaims exactly the message from the Bible that God has instructed him to give for that moment. He is God’s mouthpiece, speaking into listeners’ lives without knowing their situation. This is only possible if he depends on God and is led by the Holy Spirit.

In today’s verse, three effects of prophecy are presented:

  1. Edification: The Word of God builds us up in our faith and strengthens us in truth. What we hear is spiritually beneficial. It helps us grow in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus and progress as Christians.
  2. Exhortation: The biblical message speaks to our conscience and shows us the dangers on the path of faith. The proclaimed Word warns us of a wrong step or encourages us to stay on the right path.
  3. Comfort: The Word of God that we receive comforts our hearts and gives us new courage. It reminds us of the sources of help we have for our spiritual life and directs our thoughts to God’s never-ending grace.
