“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:29–30)
Immediately after the Lord Jesus asked His disciples to learn from Him, He presented His thoughts to them. This also applies to prayer; He wants us to imitate Him by praying with the same attitude and motivation He had.
In a nutshell, we can learn the following for our prayer life from the prayers of Jesus in Luke 10, John 11, and John 12:
- He began His prayer by praising and thanking the Father (Matthew 11:25; John 11:41).
- In prayer He had the greatness and power of God before His eyes (see Luke 10:21).
- He prayed in humility and meekness with the will of God in view (see Luke 10:21).
- He prayed with absolute confidence that the Father would answer His prayer (see John 11:41).
- He prayed that the Father would affirm His ministry, and at the same time, with the intention that the Father would receive glory for the answering of the prayer (see John 11:42).
- He spoke with His Father openly about His feelings, and about what moved Him (see John 12:27).
- He made the glorifying of the Father His highest priority in prayer (see John 12:28).
Which of these seven points characterize your prayer life?
