Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” (John 11:40).
In our Lord’s reply to Martha, we find one of the most blessed statements. It ever reached the human ear. “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” What living depth is in these words. What divine power, freshness, and comfort are in them. They set before us the heart of divine life. They show its essential principle.

The Eye of Faith

Only the eye of faith can see the glory of God. Unbelief sees only difficulty, darkness, and death. Faith sees beyond all that. It always basks in the blessed beams of divine glory. Poor Martha saw only a decaying human body. She was ruled by a dark and depressing unbelief. If simple faith had filled her, she would have gone to the tomb. She would have gone with the One who is Resurrection and Life. She would have known she should see God’s glory. She would have expected it instead of death and decay.

Faith and the Invisible

This is a great principle for the soul to grasp. It is impossible to overstate its value and meaning. Faith never looks at difficulties. It does so only in order to “feed” on them. It does not look at what is seen, but at what is unseen. It is content to see the One who is unseen. Faith lays hold of the living God. It leans on His arm. It uses His power. It draws from His inexhaustible treasury. It walks in the light of His blessed countenance. It sees His glory shine over life’s darkest scenes.
