God Still Speaks, Even Today!

Dependence in the Life of Jesus

28Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

– John 12:28

“‘Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven: ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’” (John 12:28)

Three times the voice of God was heard from heaven when the Lord Jesus was here on earth—and each time the Son of God was praying. Jesus’ prayer life was not a monologue! He prayed as He was baptized in the Jordan River, surrounded by sinners. Heaven could not keep silent. From the open heaven, the Father testified of His love for the Son and honored Him before all.

Toward the end of His ministry, the Servant of God prayed on the ‘Mount of Transfiguration’ (see Luke 9:28). He had come as a dependent Man to fulfill His Father’s eternal counsel. These counsels include that He will one day rule over this earth as King of kings and Lord of lords. Again the voice of God was heard from heaven. There, on the mountain, He honored the Son of His love before the greatest Old Testament prophets. They spoke God’s words at certain times, but in Him God spoke to His people continually (see Heb. 1:1).

God responds to prayers that are intended to honor Him. In Acts 4, the disciples prayed for boldness to speak God’s Word to the people. God affirmed this prayer and glorified Himself. He gave them boldness to speak freely and great grace so they could witness with power to the resurrection of Jesus (see Acts 4:31–33). When Peter was in prison, the believers prayed with one accord and perseverance for their brother. This joint striving in prayer pleased God so much that He answered that very night. As it is written, “Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear.” (Isa. 65:24). Nor could God remain silent when Paul and Silas, with their feet in stocks, called out to Him in prayer in the prison at Philippi, glorifying Him in the ears of the other prisoners by singing His praises (see Acts 16:24–25).

When did the Lord last speak directly to you through His Word, the Holy Spirit, or prophetic ministry? Do you pray for it and then expect Him to do so? Trust that God will glorify Himself if you pray with pure motives for His glory!
