“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he will crush your head, and you will crush his heel.” Genesis 3:15
The Bible contains many prophecies about Christ. The prophets prophesied about Him throughout the centuries. However, God reserved the right to utter the first prophecy about Christ Himself. What God said to the serpent after the fall of man contains important truths that are later developed more broadly in Scripture:
– Christ was to become a “descendant”, i.e., a true human being. This refers to the offspring of a woman, indicating that Christ would not be begotten by a man, but by the Holy Spirit.
– Christ would face the enmity of the serpent and his followers. Christ would not lend an ear to the cunning serpent’s seductive words or treat them as a friend.
– Christ, who was to set his foot on earth in grace, would suffer and die here: The serpent crushed the “heel of Christ” on the cross of Golgotha.
– Christ would gain the victory over the old serpent by crushing its head. This happened when Christ died for sinful people to free them from Satan’s bondage forever.
What a far-reaching prophecy! The Savior would come to earth and be born of a virgin; He would be opposed, would suffer and die – and yet be victorious over the great murderer of mankind.
Immediately after the “first Adam” in the Garden of Eden had failed and brought a curse, God spoke these wonderful words about the “last Adam” who would secure blessing for us. This is an incredible grace!
