The Lord wants people to recognize Him. Christ’s conversation with the woman at Jacob’s well is a prime example of this. Step by step, the woman understands more about the glory of the One who is talking to her:
Step 1: She sees Him as a Jew
– When the Lord humbly asks the Samaritan woman for water, she is surprised that she is addressed by a man whom she calls a Jew (John 4:9).
Step 2: She suspects He is greater than Jacob
– The Lord makes it clear that she should have addressed Him because He can quench the burning thirst of her soul with the living water. The woman’s question as to whether He is greater than Jacob shows that she now sees Him as more than an ordinary Jew (John 4:12).
Step 3: She recognizes Him as a giver
– Jesus shows that the living water becomes a spring of water in those who believe: the Holy Spirit is the source of strength, joy and fellowship with God. The woman recognizes in Him a giver from whom she can receive something (John 4:15).
Step 4: She calls Him a prophet
– The Lord asks her to bring her husband. She is to appear before Him in her true character as an immoral person, for a sinner can only receive a gift from God if he recognizes his sin. She admits that she is not in a lawful marriage, but does not tell the full truth. When the Lord makes it clear to her that He knows about her whole messed-up life, she calls Him a prophet (John 4:16-19).
Step 5: She recognizes Him as the Messiah
– The woman believes that Jesus can resolve an old dispute between Jews and Samaritans and asks Him the key question of where God should be worshipped. The Son of God explains that a new time is dawning in which it is no longer about a place of worship, but about worshipping the Father in the right way. The woman senses that she is being led onto a terrain that only the Messiah can illuminate. Then the Lord Jesus makes it clear to her that it is He. The disciples return from shopping and the woman leaves her water jug and goes into the city. She has drunk of the living water and recognized that Jesus is the Christ, the messenger of God (John 4:20-28).
Step 6: She testifies, and many believe
– The woman no longer speaks to Christ, but about Him and many believe her testimony. Finally, the Samaritans – and certainly the woman – speak of Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world (John 4:39, 42).
Growing in the knowledge of Christ
We see in this incident a beautiful growth in the knowledge of Christ: first He was simply a Jew, then He was compared to the patriarch Jacob and then He was recognized as the Giver and Prophet and Messiah. Finally, people spoke of Him as the Savior of the world. Peter may also have been thinking of this event when he wrote: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).
