This statement by the prophet Haggai points to the coming of Christ. Not to His first coming, because at that time the house of God was not filled with glory, but the Lord left the temple “desolate” when He departed (Mt 23:38). Haggai speaks of the future appearance of the Lord Jesus to establish His kingdom of peace.
But to what extent is the Lord Jesus “the longed-for of all nations”? Will the nations await His coming? Is it not the case that the kings of the earth and their armies will gather together to wage war against the Son of God (Rev 19,19)? There is no doubt that most people, as far as their personal feelings are concerned, do not long for the coming of the Lord. But mankind has been thirsting for peace, justice, order, security and well-being for thousands of years – and that is precisely what the Lord Jesus will bring. He will eliminate the chaos in the world and thus fulfill the deep longings of mankind.
Those who submit to Him will then benefit from His reign. This includes not only the Israelites, who will have a temple filled with glory in Jerusalem, but also people from the nations. For God has made Christ the light of the nations, to be His salvation to the ends of the earth (Is 49:6).
Should we not more love the appearing of the Lord Jesus, which will bring such a mighty blessing upon this poor earth (cf. 2 Tim 4:8)?
