There were no glass mirrors at the time the New Testament was written. Accordingly, in the verse quoted above, the apostle Paul speaks of a polished metal mirror in which one could only vaguely recognize oneself.
Let us imagine two people standing in front of a metal mirror. The first person sees the other reflected indistinctly in the metal mirror. The second person, however, looks directly at the first person. Then comes the moment when the first person turns away from the mirror and looks at the other person face to face and recognizes everything as he himself has been recognized.
We do not recognize the Lord Jesus clearly today because we are limited by our human weakness. But when the Lord Jesus comes and transforms our body of lowliness, this will change. We will recognize Him completely, just as He already recognizes us today. Then we will finally see Him face to face – that will be an indescribable glory!
