Normally, people, following their feelings, shy away from mocking a dying person. But when the Son of God hung on the cross in great agony, He was the target of scorn and contempt. Not only the soldiers and the common people revealed all their hatred, but also the leaders of the Jewish nation. They knew that Jesus had saved others in His power, but they claimed that it had departed from Him on the cross and that He could not save Himself.
How wrong they were! Why should He have lost His divine power in those moments? Had not the crowd of those who wanted to seize Him been thrown to the ground by Him just a few hours earlier with a “It is I” (John 18:6)?
But the Lord Jesus did not make use of His power on the cross, He did not save Himself. Why? Because He wanted to save others from their sins! And for this it was necessary that He bore the wrath of God on the cross and gave His life. It is only because of His accomplished work that we can still call out to all people today: “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31).
