13And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him to whom we must answer.

“Does He not see my ways and count all my steps?” (Job 31:4)

Nothing Hidden from the Lord

Nothing is hidden from the Lord’s gaze. My deepest inner life is completely open before Him. His light shines through me. Once I try to hide a corner of my heart from Him. I will feel uneasy.

His Light as a Source of Blessing

The thought that God searches the deepest thoughts of our heart. This should be very serious for us. We might even fear this fact. Yet if I let God’s light work freely in me. It will be a source of blessing for my soul. The Lord Jesus washed me in His blood. He accompanies me on the way to heaven. And He knows the secret places of my heart thoroughly. He discovers and exposes all hidden evil there. We do not need to fear that. It is His grace that reveals. It is His grace that draws us back to Him. This happens when we have drifted away. This happens when we allowed something in our heart. That thing separates us from Him.

God’s Interventions and Warnings

Perhaps I thought that a certain action of mine was good. Yet God saw something evil in my heart. Until then it had been hidden from me. Perhaps He also saw Satan lingering near me. So God intervened. He warned me and gave me the opportunity. I could condemn and judge the evil in His light. If I do not do it immediately. As soon as I notice something wrong. Then God will be forced to intervene differently. He must do it. He sees exactly how His children walk in this world. He cares about each of their wrong steps. With this knowledge we may come to Him confidently.

Living Continually in His Presence

When I commit a sin, resistance or fear rises quickly in me. This happens as soon as His divine light falls on me. Yet the Lord wants us to live always in His presence. We sense how it speaks to our conscience. We also sense what a great blessing it is. We can remain with Him with nothing clouding it. Simply because nothing stands between us.

Paul Living in God’s Light

The apostle Paul placed all his trust in the Lord Jesus’ work. He knew that his sins were forgiven. He knew that everything had been set right with God. So he could look up to heaven. He could live in the presence of God. He writes to the Corinthians: “Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we persuade people, but we are plainly known to God; and I hope that we are plainly known also in your consciences” (2 Corinthians 5:11). It is as if he were saying this. “You have seen how I live in God’s light. You have also seen how the light brightens and reveals everything in my life. Everything that moves my heart is visible to you. Even the most hidden thoughts and desires.”

The Question for Us Today

The Lord asks us today. Are we known before God and before people, as Paul was?

LORD, You have searched me and known me!

Psalm 139:1
