As the Lord Jesus approaches Jerusalem, the whole crowd of disciples cheers Him: “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Luke 19:38). The jealous Pharisees ask Jesus to rebuke His disciples. In response, He says: “If these keep silent, the stones will cry out” (Luke 19:40).
The glory of Christ must be witnessed. Therefore, if the disciples remained silent, God would use something for a testimony that is actually the least possible: silent stones. The God who can raise children from stones (Mt 3:9) can also ensure that they cry out.
At the cross, we see how God calls a witness that no one had expected. Those who accompanied Jesus stand silently at the cross. But after Christ had died, God moves a centurion to exclaim: “This man was righteous” (Lk 23:47) and: “This man was the Son of God” (Mk 15:39). The centurion was a “crying stone” to God’s glory.
God will always ensure that the Lord Jesus is glorified. May He also be able to use us for this.
